Note
|
If non-original parts are used, the car may encounter problems with driveability.
|
When the exhaust gases have been treated in the catalytic converter, they are fed via a resonator (where appropriate) and into the silencer, where the noise is reduced.
The exhaust pipe and the exhaust manifold are connected together using a flange and a sealed coupling. The exhaust system may have a slide coupling with a clamp and U-clamp or flange connection with a gasket.
Holders and rubber insulation are used in order to support the exhaust pipe and insulate against vibration, jarring and noise from the exhaust system.
The holders also separate the exhaust system from the underbody and allow the exhaust system to expand when it heats up.
The heat shields in the exhaust system are used to protect the body and other components from damage caused by the heat from the exhaust system.
The exhaust system may include the following components:
•

Resonator (where appropriate)
|
•
|
Exhaust tailpipe (where appropriate)
|
•
|
Holders for the exhaust system

Resonator
Some exhaust systems are fitted with resonators. Resonators, which are located either before or after silencers, make it possible to use silencers with less backpressure.
Catalytic converter
The catalytic converter is a cleaning device for exhaust gases which is fitted in the exhaust system in order to limit the quantity of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NOx) emitted in the exhaust gases.
The catalytic converter consists of a ceramic monolith substrate in an insulating casing made of thin metal. The substrate may be washcoated with 3 precious metals:
The catalytic converter cannot be repaired.
Silencer
The silencer reduces the noise from the exhaust gases using pipes. These pipes form ducts inside the silencer, which reduces the noise level from combustion in the engine.
