Fuel pump (689), E39

Fuel pump (689), E39

Location

Fuel pump (689), E39

The pump unit is mounted inside the front edge of the fuel tank.

Main task

The unit pumps fuel in a returnless system through the fuel pipe to the high pressure fuel pump (801), E39, on the engine and measures the fuel quantity in the fuel tank.

Type

Fuel pump unit (689), E39, includes fuel level sensor (46), E39 and engine fuel pump (323), E39 and a fuel filter. In addition, there is a pressure relief valve, which is closed during normal operation.

The fuel level sensor (46) comprises a potentiometer connected to a float mounted on an arm.

The electric fuel pump (323) is of the turbine type and feeds fuel to the fuel pipe. It also includes a non-return valve to maintain the fuel pressure in the fuel pipe.

Connection

689 pin no. Signal type Description
1 Power supply to fuel pump motor (323), E39. Connected to fuel pump control module (697), E39, pin 5.
4 Ground to fuel pump motor (323), E39. Connected to fuel pump control module (697), E39, pin 8.

46 pin no. Signal type Description
3 Ground Connected to ECM, control module, E39 (590), pin 26(A).
2 Signal Connected to ECM, control module, E39 (590), pin 25(A).

46LH pin no Signal type Description
4 Ground Connected to ECM, control module, E39 (590), pin 26(A).
3 Signal Connected to ECM, control module, E39 (590), pin 27(A).

The electrical fuel pump (323), E39, is fed with pulse width modulation (PWM) from the fuel pump control module (697), E39, which receives the command from control module, SCM (587), E39.

Fuel level sensor (46), E39, is connected to ECM, control module, E39 (590).

On AWD models a secondary tank sensor is also used: fuel level sensor (46LH), E39, also this connected to ECM.
