Starting system, AUT, E39

Location

The starter motor (4) is mounted on the engine block.

Main task

To start the engine. A solenoid slides a pinion to mesh with the ring gear on the engine flywheel. When the engine starts and the engine speed exceeds the starter motor speed, the pinion disengages from its shaft via a freewheel.

Type

The gear selector on cars with automatic transmission allows start only when the selector lever is in position P or N.

Connection

The starter motor's (4) connection 50 is connected to the main fuse box, engine bay (342) connection 17 and obtains +30 via maxi fuse 31 when relay R8 (517) is switched by the control module, E39 (590).
