Important information concerning MI, starting problems Trionic T7 |
Cars affected |
Saab 9-3 in MI 248-2259 (other markets), 248-2261 (US/CA/JP)
Saab 9-5 in MI 248-2260 (other markets), 248-2262 (US/CA/JP)
Background |
A large number of engine control modules have been exchanged for invalid reasons during the campaign concerning Trionic T7 starting problems. It is therefore essential that the following information is observed in order to prevent this from happening.
This TN replaces TA 248-X107
Parts required |
see MI for 9-3, 248-2259 (other markets), 248-2261 (US/CA/JP)
and MI for 9-5, 248-2260 (other markets), 248-2262 (US/CA/JP)
Procedure |
The following points include advice, tips and procedures.
1. |
Do not change new and approved engine control modules manufactured after 6 December 1999 (day 340).
Always check the manufacturing date with Tech 2 for the control module fitted in the car first. Refer to the instructions in the MI. |
2. |
Do not fit old and non-approved control modules.
A number of faulty control modules have been delivered. The Saab stores have now been checked and all faulty control modules have been scrapped. Nevertheless, check the manufacturing date with Tech 2 before installing a new control module. |
3. |
SPS programming is not to be performed on the new control module!
The new control modules produced for the campaign have been programmed with the correct software. TIS2000 was included in the campaign only to modify the immobilizer program. The car's VIN is entered into the engine control module automatically when it is programmed. |
4. |
DTC P1230 or P1530 may be generated after changing the control module.
DTCs are generated very rapidly for faults in any of the potentiometers in the throttle body but also due to breaks in old control modules that have not been replaced in the present campaign. If any of these codes are generated and persist even after the control module has been changed, then check whether the control module is older than 1999 day 340. Change the control module if this is the case. If the control module is newer then change only the throttle body. |
5. |
Tech 2 hangs when programming the immobilizer.
A fault in the T7 software is causing Tech 2 to hang. This can be misinterpreted as meaning the engine control module must be changed again. To facilitate programming, cut +30 by removing and refitting fuse 17 on the 9-5 and fuse 28 on the 9-3. Repeat the immobilizer programming (perhaps several times) until the message "Immobilization Code Programmed!" is shown in Tech2. The program version number 37.000 for TIS2000 must not be used for SPS programming as this is faulty and can ruin the control module. Always use the latest issue of software. |
6. |
New fault diagnosis for P1240, P1251, P1252, P1253, M00 and M01
The fault diagnosis of these DTCs includes Tech2 activation called "Throttle Motor PWM test". This activation does not work. Proceed as follows when the fault diagnosis prompts you to start the activation: Check the lead between the throttle body female connector pin 5 and pin 48 on the control module, and between the throttle body female connector pin 10 and pin 24 on the control module. If the lead is intact and not short-circuited, change the throttle body. Continue with the final check according to WIS. A corrected fault diagnosis will be included in the next issue of WIS (2001-1). |
7. |
Fault diagnosis of DTCs P1141 and P1135 concerning oxygen sensor not correct.
The fault diagnosis in WIS for 4-cyl engines has been inadequate, which has entailed the unnecessary exchange of control modules. The corresponding fault diagnosis of the V6 engine is correct. The new corrected fault diagnosis will be included in the next issue of WIS (2001-1). Use the fault diagnosis for the V6 engine for the 9-5 and 9-3 until then. |
8. |
Checking connectors before changing control modules
Make sure the pins in the connector are not damaged or been pushed in. |
9. |
The part number for this campaign deviates from EPC (Sweden only).
The part number according to the MI applies to all cars affected by the campaign, irrespective of whether certain numbers deviate from EPC. |
