Washer system

The washer system consists of a washer pump and a changeover switch on the right-hand side of the steering wheel. The washers are activated by moving the switch towards the steering wheel rim (return-spring).

The washer pump is of the centrifugal type. It supplies the windscreen and headlamps with washer fluid by polarity inversion. The fluid enters the middle of the pump, and the shape of the pump shaft and the polarity of the voltage determine whether the fluid is pumped to the rear or front (windscreen and headlamps).

The washer pump pumps the washer fluid in the hoses to the nozzles which direct the spray on to pre-selected points on the windscreen and headlamps.

There are check valves in the hoses that prevent the hoses from emptying between washings. The nozzles on the headlamp washers are located on the wiper arms.

When the washers are activated, DICE starts the windscreen wipers. The wipers continue to wipe for a further 3-5 strokes after the washers have stopped, depending on the length of time the washers were in action.

After eight seconds, the wipers perform an additional stroke if the speed of the car is less than 20 kph. This function is programmable (YES/NO) with the diagnostic tool.

When the ignition is in the ON position, +54 voltage is supplied to the switch (61) via fuse 37. Power is supplied to the washer pump (63) and DICE (628). The control module receives information that washing is in progress, and the information is used to calculate the number of strokes the windscreen wipers are to perform.

SID monitors the level of washer fluid in the reservoir. If the level is low, the control module emits an audible signal and the words WASHER FLUID LEVEL LOW are displayed on the display.
