The input shaft rotates clockwise and is connected to the rear planetary gear train's (P1) ring gear by clutch C1. The result is that the input shaft and the rear planetary gear train's ring gear rotate clockwise at the same speed.Freewheel F1 and brakes B1 and B2 prevent the sun wheel from rotating.
The inner planet gear moves clockwise round the sun wheel at the same time as it rotates clockwise.
Freewheel F2 free-wheels.
The planet carrier and the driving intermediate gear rotate clockwise as a unit at a lower speed than the input shaft. The speed is higher than in 1st gear.
Since the driving intermediate gear rotates clockwise, the driven intermediate gear and the lower planetary gear train's (P3) ring gear rotate anticlockwise at the same speed.
The lower planetary gear train's planet gear rotates anticlockwise. Brake B4 and freewheel F3 prevent the lower planetary gear train's sun wheel from rotating.
The lower planetary gear train's planet gear moves clockwise round the sun wheel while rotating at the same time. The lower planet carrier and the final drive pinion rotate anticlockwise as a unit at a lower speed than the driven intermediate gear.
