Clutch pedal with excessive stroke

Cars already delivered must be rectified the next time they are brought to the workshop for service or repairs.

Cars affected

All RHD cars with manual gearbox and chassis number in the interval W3056900-W3079140.

Background

The clutch pedal has a stroke so long that it may damage the master cylinder for the clutch system.

Procedure

Before staring any work, check modification identity plate box A2. If it is not filled in, proceed as follows:


1. Remove the diagnostics socket, 2 screws, from the underside of the dashboard.


2. Remove the underside of the dashboard on the driver's side, 3 screws, and unplug the floor lighting if the car is equipped with this feature.

3. Check the clutch master cylinder pushrod and its connection fork for any damage. If there is any damage such as a bent pushrod or cracks in the connection fork, the clutch master cylinder must be replaced.

4. Remove the clutch pedal rubber stop (grey).

5. Lubricate the tapered section of the new rubber stop using alkaline vaseline and fit the rubber stop. Use pliers to pull the tapered section of the rubber stop through the hole.

6. Fit the diagnostics socket, 2 screws, to the underside of the dashboard.

7. Connect the floor lighting if the car is equipped with this feature and refit the underside of the dashboard on the driver's side.


Marking the modification identity plate

Following completed procedure, the modification identity plate is marked in box A2. If the procedure is carried out by importer, mark with the digit “7” or if it is carried out by a dealer, mark with the digit “8”.
