Drive shaft

| To remove | 
| 1. | Raise the car and remove the wheel.   | |
| 2. | Undo the wheel hub centre-nut. | |
| 3. | Left side
        
        : Remove the drive shaft from the transmission, use 87 92 616 Removing tool, drive shafts . Right side : Remove the cover and knock out the drive shaft from the intermediate with a brass drift/hammer. | |
| 4. | Undo the clips on the brake hose and the ABS cable fasteners. | |
| 5. | Remove the screw securing the ball joint to the steering swivel member. Prise loose and lower the suspension arm. Secure it in this position with a block of wood placed between the suspension arm and the anti-roll bar. | |
| 6. | Fold out the MacPherson strut. | |
| 7. | Left side
        
        : 
 Extract the drive shaft from the gearbox. Right side: Pull the drive shaft out of the intermediate shaft. | ||||||||||
| 8. | Tap out the drive shaft from the hub using a plastic hammer. | |
| To fit | 
 
    
    | 1. | Connect the drive shaft to the hub and loosely fit the nut. | |
| 2. | Left side: 
 Fit 83 95 162 Protective collar, drive shafts into the sealing ring. | ||||||||||
| 3. | Left side: Make sure that the drive shaft is clean and then align it with the tool. 
 | ||||||||||
| 4. | Left side: Push in the rest of the shaft until the circlip clicks in. | |
| 5. | Right side: Tilt out the MacPherson strut and connect the drive shaft to the intermediate shaft until the circlip clicks in. Lubricate the splines with 87 81 684 Universal paste . | |
| 6. | Fit the ball joint to the steering swivel member and tighten it. Tightening torque 100 Nm (74 lbf ft)

| 7. | Secure the brake hose in the mounting on the steering swivel member and fit the clips as well as the two fasteners for the ABS cable. | |
| 8. | Remove the hub cap from wheels with aluminium rims. | |
| 9. | Fit the wheel. | |
| 10. | Tighten the hub centre-nut. Always use a new nut Tightening torque. 170 Nm + 45° (123 lbf ft + 45°) (Hub centre-nut without groove: 290 Nm (214 lbf ft)) | |
| 11. | Tighten the wheel screws and fit the hub cap or hub cover. Tightening torque 110 Nm (80 lbf ft)

| 12. | Fill the gearbox with oil to the correct level. | |
