Inspection of power steering return hose fastening

Cars affected

Saab 9-5, VIN W3050321 - W3053579.

Background

A fastening point may be missing on the power steering return hose on a small number of cars. This can cause the hose to be damaged by components included in the belt system.

Parts required

48 39 635 Hose LHD

48 39 643 Hose RHD

79 71 880 Cable tie

303 23 80 Power steering fluid

Procedure

Inspection

Make sure the return hose is fastened with the cable tie on the suspension strut together with the vent hoses (RHD) or together with the vent hoses in the upper cable tie (LHD) .

Is the return hose fastened properly?

YES

The hose is fitted correctly.

NO

Inspect the condition of the hose externally for wear caused by rubbing or any other damage along the entire length of hose between the power steering fluid reservoir and the steering gear.

Is the hose undamaged?

YES

Fasten the hose to the suspension strut with the respective cable tie.

NO

See “Replacing the hose” on the next page.

Replacing the hose

Make a note of the position of the hose and where it is fastened before removing it.

Important

Scrupulous cleanliness must always be observed when carrying out any work involving hydraulic components.

1. Drain the power steering fluid reservoir, using oil suction equipment.

2. Detach the reservoir and lift it aside.

3. Carefully clean the area round the return hose's connection to the power steering fluid reservoir.

4. Detach the return hose from the power steering fluid reservoir.

5. Raise the car, place a receptacle underneath and disconnect the hose from the steering gear.

6. Remove the hose.

7. Fit the new hose in the correct position and connect it to the steering gear. Fit new seals on the banjo nipple.

8. Lower the car to the floor.

9. Connect the new hose to the power steering fluid reservoir and steering gear and fasten it as illustrated.

A+B indicate the fastening points for LHD

10. Refit the power steering fluid reservoir, fill with power steering fluid CHF 11S, part no. 30 32 380, and raise the car so that the front wheels are off the ground.

11. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel 2-3 times from full lock to full lock. Switch off the engine and check the fluid level.

Warning

Never start the engine with the power steering fluid reservoir cap removed. Fluid may spurt from the reservoir onto the warm engine.

Marking the modification identity plate

After carrying out the procedures on the affected cars in accordance with MI 852-1851, MI 522-1852, MI 644-1853 and MI 732-1854, box A1 on the modification identity plate is to be marked. If the procedure was carried out by the importer, mark the box with the number “7” and if carried out by the dealer, with the number “8”.
