Additional procedures when replacing the steering gear/steering column assembly
|
Saab 9-5 up to and including VIN W3056304 (LHD) and W3056253 (RHD), in which the steering gear or steering column assembly must be replaced for some reason.
To enhance quality, a change has been made in the geometry of the steering gear and steering column assembly. The changes have been introduced in production cars from the VINs specified above.
In order to be able to position the steering wheel in the ”straight forward” position after replacing the steering gear or steering column assembly on cars up to and including the above VINs, a coding must be removed from the steering column shaft.
This SI describes the procedure.
When replacing the steering gear

When fitting the steering gear, the following procedure must be followed
after
carrying out step 20:
1.

Make sure that steering gear is located in the straight-ahead position.
|
2.
|
Remove the steering wheel airbag module. The airbag module must be stored with the metal casing face down.
|
3.
|
Remove the steering wheel.
|
4.
|
File away the coding on the steering column shaft. Protect the steering column bearing so that it is not damaged by filings.
|
5.
|
Fit the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position and tighten the nut with a torque wrench.
Tightening torque 30 Nm (25 lbf ft)

6.
|
Fit the airbag module.
|
When replacing the steering column assembly

When fitting the steering column assembly, perform the following procedure
after
step 1:
File away the coding on the steering column shaft. Protect the steering column bearing so that it is not damaged by filings.
