Inspection of rear suspension
Saab 9-5, VIN W3050321 - W3053596.
After assembling the rear suspension/damper unit, the fit of the suspension on the lower spring seat has been poor on
a small number
of cars. This has meant that the contact surface of the spring against the damper has been smaller than calculated.
45 65 446 Spring, code BJ
45 65 438 Spring, code BH
Gauge - supplied by the importer
Cars within the above VIN interval must be checked to see if the rear suspension fit is within tolerance. This can be done without removing the spring and damper.
1.
Drive the car onto a ramp.
2.
Lift the car so that the rear wheels are free.
3.
Insert the gauge with one shank on each side of the bottom coil of the spring.
4.
Turn the gauge so that the stop lug meets the end of the spring, see illustration.
5.
Tilt the gauge up and down around the stop between the stop lug and spring end, see illustration.
If the gauge does
not
pass over the outer diameter of the bottom spring coil, the spring must be changed, see Service Manual 7:1, “Adjustment/replacement, Springs, page 53.
Important
Before ordering spares, check the spring code on the VIN plate on the rear edge of the left front wing, see Service Manual 7:1, “Technical data”, Springs: “Chassis data plate .....”, page 3.
Important
Before using the gauge, check its inside diameter 78.6 ±0.2 mm with a vernier calliper.
Marking the modification identity plate
After carrying out the procedures on the affected cars in accordance with MI 852-1851, MI 522-1852, MI 644-1853 and MI 732-1854, box A1 on the modification identity plate is to be marked.
