Rear armrest lowers too easily or difficult to lower

Service directive 10462

Cars in stock must be rectified before delivery.

Cars already delivered should be rectified next time they are brought in for regular servicing or repairs.

Cars affected

Saab 9-5 M98 within VIN interval W3050321 - W3073811.

Background

On certain cars, the bolts securing the rear armrest can loosen and cause the armrest to fall down too easily.

On other cars, the bolts may get too tight, making it difficult to lower the armrest. The bolts in the mounting may even break due to the increase in effort required to lower and raise the armrest.

Parts required

51 28 244 Cover plate, LH

51 28 251 Cover plate, RH

Important

The cover plates should be fitted on cars with VIN up to and including W3052500 only.

51 28 269 Bolt (4 pcs./car)

50 28 261 Bush (4 pcs./car)

Diagnostic procedure

Before taking any measures, check box A2 on the modification identity plate. If the box is not marked, continue to the next page.

1. Lower the armrest

2. Remove the cover plates over the pivot arms.

3. Unscrew and remove the cover plate against the armrest upholstery.

If a bolt has broken:

Drill a small hole in the end of the bolt.

Use a screw extractor to remove the end of the bolt.

Check the threads. If they are damaged, the armrest must be replaced with a new one.

4. If there are bushes in the pivot arm holes, they must be removed.

5. Fit the new bushes with the flange facing out.

Important

Fit new cover plates on cars with VIN up to and including W3052500.

6. Fit the cover plate against the armrest upholstery marked RH and LH. Make sure the guides on the cover plate are facing the armrest.

7. Tighten the bolts.

Tightening torque 4 Nm (2.96 lbf ft)

8. Fit the cover plates over the pivot arms and check the function.

Marking the modification identity plate

On completion of the repair, box A2 of the modification identity plate should be marked. Mark it with a “7” if the repair was carried out by the importer (main distributor) or with an “8” if done by a dealer.
