Read the instructions below then start the fault diagnostic procedure.

Symptom: CHECK ENGINE.

P0441

EVAP Purge Valve. Malfunction.

Fault symptoms

CHECK ENGINE.

On-Board Diagnostics

Type of diagnosis:

- Once per driving cycle. Interrupted when fault criteria fulfilled or OK reported. Restarts next driving cycle.

Enable criteria:

Test 1: Coolant temperature at start must be between 5°C-40°C, the engine is running, the car stationary for 5 seconds, battery voltage 10-16 V, purging not active, diagnosis for the shut-off valve must not take place. The shut-off valve is activated directly after starting, the purging valve is closed and the tank pressure is observed for 3 seconds. If the tank pressure drops by more than -40 Pa/s while it is being measured, a diagnostic trouble code is generated. Test 2: Coolant temperature at start +5°C - 40°C. Approved transition diagnosis of oxygen sensor 1. Purge active. Idling. Max. one change in status of brake light switch. Purge adaptation higher than -6 %. Intake air pressure at least 25 kPa lower than the atmospheric pressure. Car stationary for 5 sec. The diagnosis will start once the above conditions have been fulfilled. If the diagnosis is interrupted then the speed must exceed 0 on one occasion before it is allowed to restart. The diagnosis continues then as follows: The shut-off valve is activated at the same time as the purging is stopped for 4.5 sec. In the meantime the tank pressure is observed.

Fault criteria:

Test 1: If the pressure falls by more than -40 Pa/s then an internal leak in the purging valve has been detected. Test 2: occurs as part of the EVAP diagnosis. The enable criteria are the same as for the EVAP. The diagnosis closes the purge valve and the pressure is stabilized. Then the shut-off valve is closed. The tank pressure is observed for 4.5 sec. Diagnostic trouble codes are generated if the pressure drops by more than -27.5 Pa/s. Diagnostic trouble code P0441 is generated when the fault criteria are fulfilled during the test and the dependants are OK.

Dependents:

- P0444, P0445, P0452, P0453, P1451, P1452, P1453, P0501, P0502, P0506, P0507, P1444, P1445, P1576 and P1577.

System reaction to a fault:

- None.

OK report:

If all parts of the EVAP diagnosis report OK.

Fault handling: (See “Fault diagnosis, general” for more information.)

- Type III.

Diagnostic help

Diagnostic help Fault diagnosis concerns a valve fault. Functions in the diagnostic tool related to the fault:

-Diagnosis status for EVAP diagnosis.

-Activation of EVAP diagnosis.

See also the description of readings in ”Fault diagnosis, general” for more information.

Note

To generate a diagnostic trouble code, the coolant temperature must be below +40°C (104°F) when starting the engine. The diagnostic trouble code can therefore not be generated if the engine is warm when starting. When carrying out the final check of the rectified fault, the diagnostic tool must be used so that Test 1 is initiated irrespective of starting temperature.
