Passenger airbag
Passenger airbag |
A passenger airbag is available as a factory-fitted option. In certain markets the cars are equipped as standard with a passenger airbag. The airbag is mounted in the dashboard above the glove box on the passenger side and is connected to pins 3 and 4 of the control module.
The cable carries test and detonation current from the SRS control module to the passenger airbag.
The passenger airbag, which has a volume of about 135 litres, incorporates a gas generator. The gas generator is screwed to the airbag casing which is screwed in its turn to the dashboard. The airbag is held in place by a plastic cover with fracture lines. The dashboard has corresponding fracture lines.

The gas generator consists of a steel housing, electric detonator, explosive charge and filter.
On receiving an activation command, the control module sends a current pulse to the detonator which ignites the explosive charge. On combustion, this explosive charge generates a gas. The filter cools the gas and removes particles from it before it passes into the airbag.
