Reprogramming due to catalytic converter DTC.

Cars affected

Saab 9-5 M00-01 with engine variant B308E

Background

In certain cases, the CHECK ENGINE lamp lights and DTC P0420 (faulty catalytic converter function) is generated despite the absence of a fault. This may cause unecessary replacement of an otherwise fault-free catalytic converter.

One cause of the DTC generation is tolerance limits that are too narrow in the diagnostic software. The latest version of the software for this engine variant has been adjusted to eliminate the risk of incorrect detection.

If the catalytic converter is faulty, it must be replaced. It must first be determined that the catalytic converter really is damaged and that the cause of the damage has been determined and remedied.

Symptoms

CHECK ENGINE lamp lights and DTC P0420 is generated.

Parts required

Latest version of TIS 2000 edition 2002-1

Procedure

1. SPS programme the engine control module with the latest software (TIS 2002-1 or later). See WIS - General - TIS2000 - Technical description - Service programming.

2. Test drive the car and check that the CHECK ENGINE lamp does not light and that the DTC is not regenerated.

To fulfil the conditions for DTC detection, drive using the following driving cycle:

Engine temperature over 70°C (158°F).

Warm up the catalytic converter by driving at least 5 minutes on a road with repeated heavy accelerations (Catalytic converter should reach a temperature of approx. 500°C 932°F).

Pull off to the side and allow the engine to run at idling speed for about 1 min.

Make sure the CHECK ENGINE lamp does not light.

Read out any DTCs using Tech2 (any preliminary DTCs).

Repeat the aforementioned driving cycle.

3. If the DTC is regenerated, check:

The catalytic converter for damage.

If previous repairs (e.g. replacement of ignition discharge module/spark plugs, any air leaks, etc.) could have affected emissions.

4. If the catalytic converter must be replaced, first remedy any DTCs.

5. After remedying any faults, test drive the car following the previously specified driving cycle to make sure the DTC is not regenerated.
