Warning and indicator lamps

Indicator lamp INFO DISPL

The INFO DISPL lamp comes on when a message is displayed on the SID. The lamp is supplied with +15 current from the main instrument unit and grounded by the MIU's control module. The SID constantly transmits the bus information INFO DISPL, unit ON/OFF.

On receiving INFO DISPL ON, the control module grounds the output for the lamp which then lights up.

The main instrument unit lights this lamp for 3 seconds when the ignition is switched on.

Diagnostics

The function has no diagnostics.

Central warning lamp

The central warning lamp lights up when a fault occurs in a system having to do with the car's safety.

The lamp is supplied with +15 current from the main instrument unit and grounded by the MIU's control module when one of the following warning or indicator lamps lights up:

AIRBAG lamp

Oil pressure lamp

Charging lamp

Brake fluid warning lamp

Handbrake lamp

ABS warning lamp

The handbrake lamp lights the central warning lamp if the speed passes 5 km/h from a speed below 5 km/h.

All these lamps are supplied with current (+15 circuit) in the main instrument unit and grounded in their respective systems.

The central warning lamp also lights up when:

The coolant temperature exceeds 129°C

At the same time as the central warning lamp lights up, the main instrument unit send bus information to the SID to activate an acoustic signal. This does not happen when the starting the engine since the lamps are then only tested; the engine speed must be greater than 300 rpm for this request.

Diagnostics

The function has no diagnostics.

Oil pressure warning lamp

The oil pressure warning lamp is situated in the top right-hand corner of the instrument display. This lamp warns the driver when engine oil pressure is too low.

The lamp is supplied with current in the main instrument unit and grounded via terminal 2 (K20) of the oil pressure sensor.

If the oil pressure falls below 0.3-0.5 bar, the oil pressure sensor closes, the circuit is grounded and the lamp lights up. At the same time, the central warning lamp comes on and, at engine speeds exceeding 300 rpm, the MIU sends a request to the SID to activate an acoustic signal.

Diagnostics

The function has no diagnostics.

Charge warning lamp

The charge warning lamp is situated in the top right-hand corner and informs the driver whether or not the generator is charging.

The lamp is supplied with current in the main instrument unit and grounded by the generator via terminal 3 (K20).

If the generator is not rotating or for some reason does not charge, the warning lamp circuit is grounded via the regulator through the generator's field winding, causing the lamp to light up. At the same time the central warning lamp lights up and, at engine speeds above 300 rpm, the MIU sends a request to the SID for activation of an acoustic signal.

When the generator is charging, its D+ and B+ terminals will have the same voltage. Both terminals of the warning lamp will then be supplied with this same voltage and the lamp goes out.

Connected in parallel with the lamp is a resistor which ensures that the generator receives its magnetizing current when starting, even if the lamp bulb is faulty.

A diode is connected in series with the resistor and the lamp. This diode prevents the lamp from lighting up when high charging currents are generated.

Diagnostics

The function has no diagnostics.

Warning lamp, AIRBAG

The airbag warning lamp is situated on the right-hand side of the main instrument unit. The lamp warns the driver in the event of a fault in the airbag system. A second lamp consists of the central warning lamp, which goes out only when all the warning inputs are normal.

The airbag lamp is supplied with +15 current in the main instrument unit and grounded by the airbag control module via pin 1 (K20) of the main instrument unit.

If a fault should occur in the system, the airbag lamp and central warning lamp will light up continuously and, at engine speeds above 300 rpm, the MIU will send a request to the SID for activation of an acoustic signal.

If the airbag system has been activated - sent firing current to the explosive charges in the gas generators - the airbag and central warning lamps will light up continuously.

The airbag control module lights the lamp when the ignition is turned on. If there are no faults, the lamp will go out after 3 seconds.

Diagnostics

An open circuit/short circuit sets a diagnostic trouble code in the AIRBAG control module.

Warning lamp, brake fluid level

The brake fluid warning lamp warns the driver if the level of fluid in the reservoir is too low. The lamp will also go on if there is a fault in the ABS system.

The lamp is supplied with current in the main instrument unit and grounded via terminal 12 (K20) of the brake fluid reservoir.

If the level is too low, the central warning lamp also lights and, at engine speeds exceeding 300 rpm, the MIU send a request to the SID to activate an acoustic signal.

The main instrument unit lights the brake fluid level warning lamp for 3 seconds when the ignition is turned on.

Diagnostics

The function has no diagnostics.

Warning lamp, handbrake

The handbrake warning lamp is situated on the right-hand side of the main instrument unit and informs the driver if the handbrake is applied.

The lamp is supplied with current in the main instrument unit. As long as the handbrake remains applied, the switch operated by the handbrake lever grounds the lamp via terminal 11 (K20), causing it to light up.

If vehicle speed exceeds 5 km/h from a speed less than 5 km/h while the handbrake is applied, the central warning lamp also lights and the MIU sends a request to the SID to activate an acoustic signal.

Diagnostics

The function has no diagnostics.

Indicator lamp, TCS

The TCS indicator lamp is located on the left-hand side of the main instrument unit (in the tachometer). The lamp comes on when TCS modulation is active.

The indicator lamp is turned on when the TC/ABS control module sends information on the P-bus.

The lamp comes on after a brief delay (300 ms) when TCS modulation is active and stays on as long as the system is operational but at least for one second. The lamp is turned on for 3-5 seconds when the ignition is switched on.

Diagnostics

The function has no diagnostics.

Indicator lamp, TCS OFF

If a fault occurs in the TC/ABS system, the TCS OFF lamp will turned on via the P-bus. The warning lamp also comes on if the system is disengaged manually, which can be done at speeds below 60 km/h (37.5 mph) by pressing in the TCS button. The system can be engaged at any speed by pressing the TCS button, whereby the TCS OFF lamp will be turned off again.

The lamp will come on for 3-5 seconds when the ignition is switched on and then go out if no faults are detected.

Diagnostics

A system error affecting the ABS function will turn on the warning lamps for ABS and brakes and the central warning lamp.

If the bus message from TC/ABS is absent for 2 seconds, the TCS OFF and ABS lamps will be turned on. If the bus message remains absent for another 8 seconds, the central warning lamp and the brake warning lamp will be turned on as well.

ABS warning lamp

The ABS or TC/ABS control module monitors the operation of the ABS system and turns on the ABS warning lamp on the right-hand side of the main instrument unit if a fault occurs.

When the ABS lamp lights up, the anti-lock braking system is disabled and the brakes work just like a conventional braking system.

In cars with ABS (not connected to a bus) , the lamp is powered by the main instrument unit and grounded via pin 10 of the main instrument unit (K20) by the TC/ABS control module.

In cars with TC/ABS (connected to the P-bus) the main instrument unit receives information over the bus to turn the lamp on/off.

The TC/ABS control module turns on the lamp when the ignition is turned on. It will go out within 3 seconds if there are no faults.

When the ABS warning lamp goes on, the central warning lamp will also go on.

Diagnostics

The function has no diagnostics.
