To remove

Warning

The work involved in removing the fuel pipe requires working with the vehicle's fuel system. The following points should therefore be heeded in conjunction with these measures:

• Have a class BE fire extinguisher on hand! Be aware of the risk of sparks, i.e. in connection with electric circuits, short-circuiting, etc.

• Absolutely No Smoking!

• Ensure good ventilation! If there is approved ventilation for evacuating fuel fumes then this must be used.

• Wear protective gloves! Prolonged exposure of the hands to fuel can cause irritation to the skin.

• Wear protective goggles.

Important

Be particulary observant regardning cleanliness when working on the fuel system. Loss of function may occur due to very small particles. Prevent dirt and grime from entering the fuel system by cleaning the connections and plugging pipes and lines during disassembly. Use 82 92 948 Plugs, A/C system assembly. Keep components free from contaminants during storage.

1. Read and note any DTCs using Tech2.

2. Unplug the connector on the power stage for the fuel injectors; see method.

3. Remove the upper intake manifold with mass air flow sensor from the turbo.

4. Remove the upper engine cover.

5. Detach the turbo pressure hose from the intake manifold.

6. Remove the upper intake manifold.

7. Unplug the connectors from the EGR valve, fuel temp. sensor and absolute pressure sensor.

8. Remove the fuel injection pipes of cylinders 1, 3, 4 and 5.

Warning

Release the pressure in the fuel system before starting work. Cover the fuel connections with a rag to protect against spurting fuel.

9. Detach the rear cylinder bank's fuel return line with mountings.

10. Detach the glow plug electrical connections and remove the glow plugs.

11. Fit 83 95 741 Adapter, compression gauge together with the compression gauge in the hole for cylinder 1's glow plug.

12. Turn over the engine using the starter motor. Note the compression pressure. Continue with the other cylinders in ignition sequence 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

To fit

1. Fit the glow plugs and connect the cables.

Tightening torque: 18 Nm (13 lbf ft)

2. Fit the rear bank's fuel return line with mountings and new seals.

Tightening torque: 16 Nm (12 lbf ft)

3. Fit the fuel injection pipes.

Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 lbf ft)

4. Plug in the connectors.

5. Fit the upper intake manifold using new seals.

6. Attach the turbo pressure hose on the intake manifold.

7. Refit the upper engine cover.

8. Fit the intake manifold with mass air flow sensor to the turbo.

9. Plug in the connector on the power stage for the fuel injectors.

10. Bleed the fuel system as described in Bleeding the fuel system.

11. Clear any DTCs.
