Brief description, V6

The cooling system is pressurised with cross-flow radiator and expansion tank. A new type of coolant is being used in all Saab engines from model year 02 that does not require changing during service.

The coolant pump is located on the engine block under the timing cover, and is driven by a gear on the crankshaft. The thermostat, which is of the inlet type, is located in the engine oil heat exchanger which is mounted in front of the front cylinder bank.

An auxiliary heater connected to the cooling system also functions as a parking heater. Because the engine uses supplied energy much more efficiently, residual heat is lower. So, an auxiliary heater is used to quickly make the climate of the passenger compartment comfortable. It is of the same make and function of that previously used on 9-3 4-cylinder Diesel, but with a much higher output (5 kW vs. the previous 3 kW). The auxiliary heater is mounted under the ABS unit and is connected in such a way that the engine coolant flow passes through the heater and is warmed before it reaches the heater core. This allows the passenger compartment to quickly warm to a comfortable level.

With the engine running, the heater will receive a signal via a relay from SID, which determines whether to start the heater based on the outside temperature. Beside external criteria, the heater has an engine coolant temperature sensor that determines whether start should be allowed after measuring the temperature of the coolant.

All 9-5 with diesel engines have dual radiator fans for efficient cooling. See DICE for description and function.
