Coolant flow, V6

Thermostat closed

From the coolant pump - through a channel in the cylinder block - up through the cylinder heads - through a hose, circulation pump and auxiliary heater to the heat exchanger - through a return hose/pipe from the heat exchanger - back to the thermostat housing - back to the coolant pump.

From the coolant pump - through a channel in the cylinder block - up through the cylinder heads - through a bypass channel - back to the coolant pump (Internal circulation).

Some of the flow goes out from the cylinder block - through pipes to the oil cooler - through pipes back to the pump.

With the thermostat normally open

From the coolant pump - through a channel in the cylinder block - up through the cylinder heads - through the radiator - through the thermostat housing (past the thermostat) - back to the coolant pump.

Some of the flow goes out from the cylinder block - through a hose to the auxiliary heater - on through a hose to the heat exchanger - through a return hose/pipe from the heat exchanger back through the thermostat housing to the pump.

Some of the flow goes out from the cylinder block - through pipes to the oil cooler - through pipes back to the pump.

With the thermostat fully open

The thermostat closes the lower passage (bypass) of the thermostat housing. Most of the coolant then passes through the radiator. The rest passes the oil cooler and heat exchanger.
