Customer Satisfaction Campaign 154 06

Cars in stock must be rectified before delivery.

Owners whose cars have already been delivered must be personally informed about this problem and encouraged to promptly contact their nearest Saab dealer in order to have the fault rectified.

Cars affected

Saab 9-5 M02 with V6 diesel engine and with chassis numbers in the range 23000132 - 23013497

Background

The 9-5 M02 with a V6 diesel engine seems to lack power and tends to stall when pulling away. This has to be compensated for by operating the clutch with special care. New software for the control module has therefore been developed to eliminate this problem. Also included in the software are functions to reduce engine vibrations between 800 and 900 rpm and to reduce combustion noise.

Symptoms

The engine lacks power at low speeds.

Parts required

(75) 39 20 19 Software for engine control module VS3MIKM, TIS version 2001-3

Procedure

Before proceeding, check box B4 of the modification identity plate. If the box is not marked, continue as follows.

Read this first!

Check that the computer to be used includes the latest issues of Tech2 and TIS 2000 with the correct versions for the re-programming.

Before starting work the condition of the battery must be checked. This is done using battery tester 86 12 533 (EU) or 86 12 525 (US). Follow the instructions for the battery tester. Avoid charging the battery during SPS programming as this can interfere with the re-programming. During re-programming it is necessary to turn off all current demanding components/systems such as lighting, air conditioning, audio systems, heated seats, seating ventilation and radiator fans.

If the re-programming is interrupted as a result of low battery capacity and Tech2 communication stops or if the wrong fuse is removed, this must be corrected first. Then remove the cable from the positive battery terminal and wait at least 12 seconds before reconnecting. This must be carried out before restarting the re-programming.

Read and note the vehicle chassis number.

With re-programming follow carefully the following instructions to ensure a successful result.

1. Connect Tech2 to the diagnostic connector and turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

2. Start Tech2 and read any diagnostic trouble codes for all systems. Note the codes.

3. Go back to the main menu and select " Service Programming System (SPS)".

4. Select " Request Info".

5. Select " Model Year(s): -02", " Vehicle Type(s): 9-5", " Select Group: Engine", " System: ECD V6 TID"

6. Thereafter follow the instructions on Tech2.

7. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position, disconnect Tech2 from the vehicle and connect it with hardware lock SPS to the COM-port on the computer (flat cable).

8. Thereafter follow the instructions on the computer.

9. Start SPS and compare the chassis number. Check if there is a more recent programme in the computer than that installed in the ECD V6 diesel. In which case load it down into Tech2.

10. After the programme transfer is complete disconnect Tech2 from the computer and reconnect to the vehicle.

11. Open the bonnet and separate the radiator fan connector at the fan cowling.

12. If the vehicle has TCS, remove the ABS/TCS/ESP fuse 29 in the dashboard fuse box.

13. Turn the ignition key to the ON position.

Note

- Turn off all high current consuming components/systems:

- Lighting

- ACC

- Audio system

- Electrically heated seats

- Seating ventilation

14. Start Tech2 and select " Service Programming System (SPS)".

15. Select " Program ECU".

16. Follow the instructions on Tech2.

17. Wait until the re-programming is complete. This takes about 20 minutes.

18. When " Programming successful!" is displayed on Tech2 the re-programming is complete. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK position and reconnect the radiator fan connector. Refit fuse 29 for the ABS/TCS/ESP.

19. Read and note the diagnostic trouble codes for all systems. Compare with any codes noted at point 2 previous to the SPS programming. If, as is possible, any new codes have been registered, they have occurred in connection with the re-programming. Delete the trouble codes in all systems and correct the faults indicated at point 2. Follow thereafter the fault diagnosis in WIS.

20. Connect an exhaust extraction hose and start the engine in order to check its operation. Switch off the engine.

21. Disconnect Tech 2 and fold back the diagnostic connector cover.

Marking the modification identity plate

After completion of the procedure on affected vehicles according to MI 260-2316, MI 644-2319 (LHD), MI 248-2318 and MI 644-2320 the modification identity plate must be marked in square B4. If the procedure has been carried out by an importer mark the square with the number "7" and if by a dealer with the number"8".
