Background

The rain sensor controls two relays for the windscreen wipers. When one relay is switched off a voltage spike occurs which can destroy the rain sensor relay output.

In the case of customer complaint the following action must be taken.

Symptom description

The windscreen wipers only work at low speed when the rain sensor function is activated.

55 49 597 (CA: 30592984) Relay (x2)

92 150 191 (CA: 92150191) Cable tie

51 49 869 (CA: 30586596) Rain sensor

If necessary (if the hooks break when fitting the rain sensor):

12 799 937 (CA: 12799937) Hook (x2)

Procedure



Cars with Vehicle Identification Number within the range 23000001 - 33045713.


1. Detach the battery negative cable.

2. Remove the cover from the engine bay electrical centre.

3. Remove relay FR7 (relay, rain sensor) and FR17 (relay, intermittent wiper, front).


4. Undo the relay plate and move it aside.


5. Cut off the cable tie.


6. Locate relay point FR7 and prise out the Green/White (GN/WH) cable from position 1. Prise out the Violet (VT) cable from position 2. Use removal tool from removal kit 85 80 151.


7. Insert the Green/White (GN/WH) cable into position 2 and the Violet (VT) cable into position 1.

8. Locate relay point FR17 and prise out the Red/Blue (RD/BU) cable from position 1. Prise out the Violet (VT) cable from position 2. Use removal tool from removal kit 85 80 151.


9. Insert the Red/Blue (RD/BU) cable into position 2 and the Violet (VT) cable into position 1.

10. Secure the wiring harness with a cable tie.


11. Fit the relay plate in the electrical centre.

12. Fit the new relays, with orange cover, to relay point FR7 and FR17.


13. Fit the electrical centre cover.

14. Connect the negative cable of the battery.

15. Set the time and date in SID.

16. Replace rain sensor, see WIS 9-5 M02/03 - 3. Electrical system - Wash/wipe systems - Adjustment/Replacement - Rain Sensor.




Cars with Vehicle Identification Number within the range 33045714 - 33047212


1. Remove the cover from the engine bay electrical centre.

2. Remove relay FR7 (relay, rain sensor) and FR17 (relay, intermittent wiper, front).


3. Fit the new relays, with orange cover, to relay point FR7 and FR17.

4. Fit the electrical centre cover.

5. Replace rain sensor, see WIS 9-5 M02/03 - 3. Electrical system - Wash/wipe systems - Adjustment/Replacement - Rain Sensor.
