Fault symptoms

Noise and shifting problems.

Conditions

Various cases of cars equipped with 5-speed automatic transmission.

Action

No.

MY affected

1

Sluggish shifting 2-3 with limited throttle application.

a) Incorrect servo cover for brake B4. Check the servo cover; replace as necessary. Use P/N 5590500.

b) Delete adaptation values

c) Carry out adaptation

d) If possible, compare the repaired car with another car of the same type and model.

2

Delayed and sluggish shifting between P-D and N-D.

Sluggishness in valve housing's valves (SLS, SLT). Replace the valve housing with a modified one (P/N 5449780).

3

Sluggishness and hesitation in downshifting 3-2 at 50-70 km/h

Update software in TCM. (Download from IRIS).

4

Downshifting for no reason during cold weather and at low speed.

Common problem with output shaft speed sensor. Replace the speed sensor.

5

Slipping lock-up.

a) Check the level and quality of transmission fluid and the oil cooling.

b) Check whether a diagnostic trouble code has been detected. Delete the trouble code and road test the car.

c) If the diagnostic trouble code recurs, replace the gearbox. A bushing may have moved and blocked the oil delivery ducts.

d) If the fault does not reappear, return the car to the customer.

6

Uneven engine speed when shifting 2-3 after having driven in the top gear for a long period of time. The fault occurs when the car drops below 20 km/H and then accelerates for upshift to 3rd gear.

a) Check the level and quality of transmission fluid.

b) Update software in TCM. (Download from IRIS).

c) M04 has a modified valve housing and new software. Modified valve housing kit M02-M03 P/N 5449780

d) Check the transmission fluid if the fault persists.

7

Too many gear changes at low speed.

This is a concept option for 5-speed transmissions.

8

Hard shifting when braking to stop

a) Compare the transmission serial number and the software ID number to make sure they correspond.

b) Delete the adaptation values and carry out Adaptation, resetting. If this measure does not help and the customer complaint persists, change the transmission.

9

Very hard engagement of D and R

a) Read the value of the temperature sensor in a cold car and check that it corresponds with the ambient temperature.

b) If the value differs too much, check that the temperature signal is working. c) Make sure that the wiring harnesses and connectors are working without open circuit; see link.

Noise.

a) Determine under which conditions the noise occurs (gear position, speed, accelerator pedal position, fluid temperature)

b) Contact Saab Automobile, Front line for assistance. Check whether the noise is related to engine speed or vehicle speed by changing gear.

c) Describe the character of the noise, whining sound, rattling, clicking etc.

d) Checklist, completed with gearbox replacement. See link.

11

Diagnostic trouble codes for electrical components

a) Read the diagnostic trouble codes, clear them and road test the car.

b) Check the function of the component identified by the diagnostic trouble code by checking whether the diagnostic trouble code is repeated with a non-faulty component.

c) Check that the cables and connectors are working satisfactorily.

12

Hard downshifting 3-2

a) Check whether the Vehicle Identification Number and the gearbox number correspond. (In certain M03 cars the M04 gearbox has been installed)

b) If the above is in order, check the defective car with another of the same type.

Oil leakage

a) Clean at the leakage and road test the car.

b) If the leak returns, take a photograph of the area indicated with a pen.

c) Rectify the leak or change transmission if necessary.
