Gearshift solenoid valves, S1-S5

Gearshift solenoid valves, S1-S5

The five solenoids, S1-S5, are in the valve housing on the gearbox. The solenoid valves control the hydraulic gearchange valves by opening and closing the oil flow to each gearchange valve.

The solenoids are grounded via their sheaths directly through the valve housing. The control module activates each solenoid by making or braking the B+ circuit. S1, S2 and S4 are open at zero current while S3 and S5 are closed at zero current. Solenoid S1 is connected to pin 34 (B) on the control module, solenoid S2 to pin 24 (B), solenoid S3 to pin 8 (B), solenoid S4 to pin 14 (B), and solenoid S5 to pin 13 (B),

The control module activates the appropriate valve for upshifting or downshifting depending on the input/output speed, accelerator position and selected driving program.

The function of the solenoids with respect to the gear position is as follows:

Resistance of the windings of solenoid S1 is normally 12-16 Ω at 20°C, and 11-15 Ω at 20°C for S2-S5.

Diagnostics

Diagnostic trouble code P0773 will be generated in the event of a fault in solenoid S1.

Diagnostic trouble code P0753 will be generated in the event of a fault in solenoid S2.

Diagnostic trouble code P0758 will be generated in the event of a fault in solenoid S3.

Diagnostic trouble code P0763 will be generated in the event of a fault in solenoid S4.

Diagnostic trouble code P0768 will be generated in the event of a fault in solenoid S5.

In each case the transmission will go into limp home.
