Cars in stock must be rectified before delivery.

A personal communication must be sent to the owners of cars already delivered requesting them to get in touch with the nearest Saab garage as soon as possible to have the fault rectified.

Saab 9-5 M02 with V6 diesel engine and with chassis numbers in the range 23000132-23017367

Background

The power steering return hose can have been incorrectly fitted and can thus be lying against the alternator and the alternator pulley. This can cause damage to the return hose so that the hydraulic fluid leaks out and the power steering ceases to function.

Symptom description

Loss of power steering function.

Leakage of hydraulic fluid from the power steering.

Loud noise from the power steering pump.



Parts required

With a replacement of a damaged return hose

With fastening of the hose to the suspension strut housing

Procedure

Before proceeding, check box B4 of the modification identity plate. If the box is not marked, continue as follows.


1. Check the power steering return hose for abrasion and pressure marks.

2. Is the return hose damaged?

If YES

Replace the hose in accordance with "Replacement of power steering return hose" in this MI.

If NO

Continue with point 3.

3. Is the return hose fastened to the suspension strut housing?


If YES

Continue with point 8.

If NO

Continue with point 4.

4. Remove the cable tie which restrains the fuel pipe.


5. Rotate the holder so that the protrusion is pointing downwards.


6. Attach the return hose to the holder with a new cable tie.


7. Ensure that the lower fuel pipe and the return hose are firmly located in the double clip.

8. Is the return hose fastened with a cable tie to the low pressure pipe of the air conditioning ?


If YES

Mark the modification identity plate according to the instruction below.

If NO

Continue with point 9.

9. Fasten the return hose to the low pressure air conditioning pipe with a cable tie.


Replacement of the power steering return hose.

The hose must be replaced if it is damaged.


Removal

1. Empty the power steering fluid reservoir using an oil suction pump.

2. Undo and lift aside the reservoir.


3. Clean carefully around the return hose connection at the reservoir.

4. Remove the return hose from the reservoir.

5. Raise the car.

6. Remove the lower engine shield.

7. LHD: Cut off the cable tie which fastens the return hose to the steering box.


8. Place an oil tray under the vehicle and remove the return hose from the steering servo.



Re-assembly

1. Connect the hose to the steering box.

Note

Use new sealing washers with the banjo connector.


Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 lbf ft)

2. LHD: Fasten the return hose to the pressure hose with two cable ties.


3. Assemble the clamp which holds the hose to the steering box.

4. Replace the lower engine shield.

5. Fasten the return hose to the low pressure air conditioning pipe with a cable tie.


6. Connect and fasten the return hose to the fluid reservoir. Ensure that the white line on the hose is aligned with the arrow on the reservoir.

7. Assemble the servo reservoir.

8. Fasten the return line to the suspension strut housing with a cable tie.


9. Bleed the system, see WIS - Steering - Power steering system - Adjustment, replacement - Bleeding the power steering system.


Marking the modification identity plate

After completion of the procedure according to MI 248-2318, MI 260-2316, MI 644-2319 (LHD) and MI 644-2320 the modification identity plate must be marked in box B4. If the procedure has been carried out by an importer mark the box with the number "7" and if by a dealer with the number "8".
