Driver airbag
Driver airbag |
On the driver's side, there is a gas generator and an airbag. The gas generator is secured in a magnesium housing. The airbag is protected by a plastic cover with fracture lines mounted to the metal bracket. The airbag has a volume of approx. 58 litres.
The steering wheel centre pad (airbag module) is supplied with test and detonation current from a coil spring (contact roller), which also supplies the SID with information from the steering wheel buttons.

The gas generator consists of an aluminium housing, electric detonator, explosive charge and filter. The gas generator works in two stages. These stages are divided into a primary stage of 80 % and a secondary stage of 20 %. Depending on the information the control module receives from the different sensors, the stages are ignited with different time delays.
On receiving an activation command, the control module sends a current pulse to the detonator which ignites the explosive charge. On combustion, this explosive charge generates a gas. The filter cools the gas and removes particles from it before it passes into the airbag.
For more information on ignition signals, see SRS control module .
