Read the instructions below then start the fault diagnostic procedure.

Symptom: CHECK ENGINE.

P0116

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit. Performance Problem.

Fault symptoms

CHECK ENGINE.

On-Board Diagnostics

Type of diagnosis:

- Once per driving cycle.

Enable criteria:

- Battery voltage should be 10.2-15.8 V.

- Coolant temperature at start should be between -11 °C and +35 °C.

- Total fuel quantity since start (within a period of 820-1220 seconds) should exceed 500 cm 3 .

- P0117, P0118 should not be detected.

- Speed should be 0-220 km/h.

Fault criteria:

- Temperature increase is less than 26 °C or greater than 120 °C since start.

Dependents:

- None.

System reaction to a fault:

- The control module will continue using the coolant temperature substitute value, -20 °C on start and +60 °C when the engine is running. The following limitations apply: Pedal position sensor adjustable to max 60%

OK report:

- When the temperature increase has been within the permitted interval.

Fault handling: (See section Fault handling III, other emissions-related components and functions for more information)

- Type III.

Diagnostic help

Fault diagnosis concerns an electrical fault in connecting leads or in the sensor.

Functions in the diagnostic tool related to the fault:

- Read value: Coolant Temperature ( Coolant Temperature Sensor)

See also description of read value under "Read Values" menu for more information.

Checking the wiring

Jiggle the wiring harness at several points and in different directions to detect intermittent breaks and short circuits. Observe the multimeter, diagnostic tool or test lamp during the check.
