A catalytic converter is used to reduce exhaust emissions, It can oxidise (C

    n

   H

) and carbon monoxide (CO) to carbon dioxide (CO

    2

   ) and water (H

    2

O). The catalytic converter can also contribute to the partial oxidation of particles formed in the exhausts from diesel engines. A high sulphur content of the diesel fuel will lead to contamination of the catalytic converter as well as an risk for increased formation of sulphates.

The catalytic converter comprises a ceramic substrate (monolith) with a porous layer to increase the active surface. This layer contains microscopic particles of the catalyst platinum (Pt).
