Background

When driving in severe wet weather there is a risk of water entering the intake system which can result in deteriorating engine functionality.

After customer complaint, proceed as described.

Symptom description

The functionality of the engine deteriorates due to wet and clogged filter insert.

Procedure


1. Remove the centre grille as follows:

1.A. Lift it slightly so that the bottom edge loosens.

1.B. Draw it forwards and downwards so that the spring-loaded clips release.


2. Remove the right-hand horn and turn it to one side.


3. Remove the centre two-stage rivet for the front bumper shell.


4. Remove the screw for the air intake.


5. Raise the car and remove the spoiler shield.


6. Remove the screw which holds the bumper to the wing liner.


7. Remove the air cleaner cover.

8. Remove the filter. Clean the air filter drain.


9. Fit a new filter and fit the air cleaner cover.

10. Remove the air intake.


11. Fit the new air intake.

12. Fit the spoiler shield and the screw that holds the bumper to the wing liner.


13. Lower the car and fit the right-hand horn.


14. Fit the air intake screw and the shield onto the air intake.


15. Fit the centre two-stage rivet for the front bumper shell.


16. Fit the centre grille by pressing it into the correct position.


17. Press down on the snap fastener and remove the right-hand indicator cluster.


18. Remove the mass air flow sensor connector.


19. Remove the mass air flow sensor and hoses.

20. Fit a new hose to the air cleaner casing.


21. Fit the mass air flow sensor to the hose. Check that the arrow on the mass air flow sensor points in the direction of the turbo. Make sure that the hose clip does not chafe against the body.


22. Fit the hose between the mass air flow sensor and the turbo intake manifold. Fit the screw on the hose clamp on the same side as the mass air flow sensor connector.

Tightening torque, mass air flow sensor 3.5 Nm (2.5 lbf ft)

23. Connect the mass air flow sensor connector.

24. Fit the right-hand indicator cluster so that the three guide pins are set in the correct position. Press in the indicator cluster. Check that the clip has engaged properly.


25. Download the software and carry out SPS-programming as per WIS - General - TIS2000 - Technical description - Service programming - PSG16. Use software L5BMLM50 and TIS 2000 Edition 2003-1 update1 or later.
