Drive shaft, left-hand

To remove


1. Raise the car and remove the wheel.

2. V6 diesel: Remove the lower engine cover.


3. Remove the left-hand side cover.


4. Remove the protective cap from the hub centre-nut (up to MY03).


5. Remove the hub centre nut.

6. Remove the bolt securing the ball joint to the steering swivel member. Prise loose and lower the suspension arm. Fixate it in position with a wooden block placed between the suspension arm and anti-roll bar.


7. Undo the clips on the brake hose and the ABS cable mountings.

Important

Place a receptacle under the gearbox in order to avoid oil spillage on the floor.


8. Tap the universal joint out of the wheel hub. Use a plastic mallet.

9. Tilt out the MacPherson strut. Pull the MacPherson strut backwards and fasten with 83 95 212 Strap .

10. Disconnect and pull the drive shaft from the gearbox. Use 87 92 616 Removal tool, drive shafts .

Important

Exercise caution; make sure that the tripod does not come loose from the inboard universal joint driver (aut).



To fit


1. Fit 83 95 162 Protective collar, drive shafts into the sealing ring.

Important

Always replace the shaft seals in the gearbox. Lubricate with gearbox oil.


2. Make sure that the drive shaft is clean and then insert it into the protective sleeve. Lubricate the shaft with gearbox oil.

Important

Fit the drive shaft in the gearbox until approx.20 mm are remaining and pull out the tool before the sealing surface of the shaft reaches the shaft seal.



3. Push in the rest of the shaft until the circlip clicks in.

4. Tilt out the MacPherson strut and connect the drive shaft to the hub.

5. Make sure the drive shaft reaches its end position in the wheel hub. Fit the ball joint to the steering swivel member and tighten.

Tightening torque 50 Nm (37 lbf ft)

Warning

Make sure the ball joint journal is visible above the steering swivel member before fitting the bolt.


6. Fit the side cover in the wheel housing.


7. Fit the brake hose to the bracket on the steering swivel member and fit the clips as well as the two mountings for the ABS lead.


8. Fit the wheel loosely and lower the car.

9. Tighten the hub centre-nut. Always use a new nut

Tightening torque 230 Nm (170 lbf ft)

10. Raise the car and remove the wheel. Fit the protective cap to the hub centre-nut (up to MY03).

11. Fit the wheel and tighten the wheel bolts. See Wheels

Tightening torque 110 Nm (80 lbf ft)

Important

The wheel must hang freely when the wheel bolts are being tightened.


12. Fill the transmission with oil to the correct level. See Topping up with transmission fluid .

13. V6 diesel: Fit the lower engine cover.


14. Lower the car to the floor.
