The gear selector position sensor is mounted on the transmission casing. It contains the reversing light switch, starting interlock switch and switches which tell the control module which gear is engaged.
The gear selector position sensor is a position switch that is powered via +15. A number of slip contacts power the sensor outputs. The combination of terminals A, B, C and PA indicate the current selector lever position (see table). The slip contacts can be either closed (ON) or open (OFF).

To ensure that the control module receives accurate information, it is important for the sensor to be correctly adjusted. Special tool 87 92 467 should be used for adjusting the sensor.

Diagnostic trouble code P0731 is generated in the event of a fault in gear position 1Diagnostic trouble code P0732 is generated in the event of a fault in gear position 2
Diagnostic trouble code P0733 is generated in the event of a fault in gear position 3
Diagnostic trouble code P0734 is generated in the event of a fault in gear position 4
Diagnostic trouble code P0735 is generated in the event of a fault in gear position 5
Diagnostic trouble code P0736 is generated in the event of a fault in the reverse gear position
The transmission will go into the limp-home mode for all these DTCs.
