ESP ON/OFF switch

ESP ON/OFF switch

The ESP function can be turned ON/OFF by means of a spring-loaded switch on the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel. The switch disengages both the ESP and TCS functions. Turning the ESP function off sends a bus message to the main instrument unit causing the ESP OFF lamp to light up.

The switch can be used to disengage the ESP function at speeds below 60 km/h (37.5 mph) or to engage it at any speed. The ESP function is always engaged when the ignition is turned ON.

During braking the ESP system will operate irrespective of whether or not it has been turned off. This means that should the control module determine that conditions for ESP regulation are fulfilled and the driver brakes, braking will be regulated by the control module.

The switch is connected to pin 27 of the TC/ABS control module and grounding point G41S. The ESP control module supplies B+ on pin 31. When the button is pressed, the circuit is closed to ground and the ESP function is engaged or disengaged depending on its previous mode.

Diagnostics

If the button is held pressed in for more than 10 seconds, the ESP control module will engage the ESP function after which it will not be possible to disengage the function until the ignition has been switched off and on again. This does not set any DTCs.
