Extended Ignition Discharge Module Diagnosis for Trionic 7

Cars affected

Saab 9-5 M03- from VIN 33041133 with Trionic 7 engine management system

Background

A newly developed T7 software allows for more precise Tech2 diagnostics of the ignition discharge module. The diagnosis detects absent sparks and inconsistent combinations of knock and combustion signals. The software was introduced into production (9-5 M03) from VIN 33041133.

Parts required

Tech2 ver. 108.000

Procedure

Fault diagnosis, P diagnostic trouble codes

1. The extended ignition discharge module diagnostics do not generate any P DTCs but are instead a complement to the normal diagnostics. P DTCs must always take priority during fault diagnosis. Always read DTCs according to the normal procedure first and repair or replace according to the fault diagnosis description in WIS.

The following P diagnostic trouble codes relate to the ignition discharge module:

P0327 Knock Sensor Circuit. Low Input, Bank 1.

P0332 Knock Sensor Circuit. Low Input, Bank 2.

P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor. Malfunction.

P1310 Ignition Discharge Module. Not Powered, Bank 1.

P1312 Combustion Detection Cyl. 1+2. Open Circuit / Short to B+.

P1313 Combustion Detection Bank 1. Open Circuit / Short to B+.

P1320 Ignition Discharge Module. Not Powered, Bank 2.

P1324 Combustion Detection Bank 2. Open Circuit / Short to B+.

P1334 Combustion Detection Cyl. 3+4. Open Circuit / Short to B+.

2. If none of the above DTCs are generated despite a suspected ignition discharge module fault, see “Fault Diagnosis, extended ignition discharge module diagnosis” below.

Fault Diagnosis, extended ignition discharge module diagnosis

1. Connect Tech2, select T7 and “ Ignition Discharge Module Diagnose” in the menu “ Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)”. If the diagnosis is present in the software, a value/code for “ Current Status”, “ Failure Status” and “ IDM Check Code” are displayed. Additional information explaining “ Current Status” in plain text is displayed in Tech2.

2. If a value for “ Failure Status” is displayed before the engine is started:

Make a note of the “ Failure Status”. Repair or replace according to the table below. Clear DTCs with Tech2 after work is completed.

3. If no value for “ Failure Status” is displayed before the engine is started:

Run the diagnostics according to the instructions in the “Information Text” field on the Tech2 screen. If a value for “ Failure Status” is displayed during starter motor cranking, the synchronisation phase or after release of the ignition key back to ON after start attempt, make a note of “ Failure Status”.

Repair or replace according to the table below. Clear DTCs with Tech2 after work is completed.

Description of Tech2 status information

Current Status”

A value indicating the current diagnostic procedure phase is displayed here. If the value is 130 or lower, no ignition discharge module fault has yet been detected.

Failure Status”

If “ Current Status” indicates a value that is 131 or higher, a fault has been detected that is also displayed as “ Failure Status”. With some exceptions, “ Failure Status” is then stored during 40 warming-up cycles. The function is similar to fault handling for regular P DTCs. “ Failure Status” is cleared during DTC clearing with Tech2.

IDM Check Code”

This code is displayed if a fault is detected. A value for “ Failure Status” is also displayed. “ IDM Check Code” contains data from the fault occurrence and car identification. The code is cleared during DTC clearing with Tech2.

IDM Check Code” is not currently in use and therefore does not need to be noted.

“Information Text”

In this field, Tech2 displays “ Current Status” in plain text.
