Oil volume in engine too low

Special Policy Program 157 19

Cars in stock must be rectified before delivery.

Cars already delivered must be rectified in connection with a scheduled visit to the garage for service or repairs.

Cars affected

Saab 9-5 with engine alternative D308L, M02-M05 within Vehicle Identification Number range 23000132 - 53511177

Background

During heavy acceleration, and combined with the oil level in the engine being low (in the area by the dipstick's min. mark), the oil pump can draw in oil mixed with air. This affects the pressure to the oil cooling nozzles for piston cooling. As a consequence the pistons overheat which can result in piston abrasion. The driver receives no indication of overheating before the damage has been caused. A new dipstick has been developed on which the min. and max. levels have been moved up 0.5 litres.

Symptom description

Oil level too low. Piston abrasion.

Parts required

55 559 867 Dipstick which is calibrated for 0.5 litres extra oil

40 - 12 805 272 Engine oil, Shell Helix +S 5W-40 GMLLB 025 (sufficient for 2 cars)

For fitting the modification identity plate:

12 785 148 Modification identity plate

93 160 907 Cleaning agent Motip Dupli, aerosol 400 ml (sufficient for 50-100 cars)

Procedure

Before proceeding, check box E2 of the modification identity plate for M02, and box B2 for M03-M05. From and including M04 the table "Table of Modifications" can be found in the car's Warranty and Service Book. A modification identity plate must be fitted in accordance with the section "Fitting the modification identity plate" where local directives require the marking of the car. If the box is not marked, continue as follows.

1. Replace the dipstick with the new type.

2. Check that the oil level is between the max. and min. lines on the new dipstick.

3. Fill as necessary, which in a normal case is with 0.5 litres of oil.

4. Check the oil level again.

Marking the modification identity plate

After carrying out the procedure, box E2 on the modification identity plate for M02, and box B2 for M03-M05 must be marked. From and including M04 the table "Table of Modifications" can be found in the car's Warranty and Service Book. Mark the box with the number "7" if the procedure was carried out by the importer or with the number "8" if carried out by the dealer.

Fitting the modification identity plate

Note

A modification identity plate must only be fitted where local directives require the marking of the car.
