P0118

Read the instructions below then start the fault diagnostic procedure.

Symptom: CHECK ENGINE.

P0118

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit. Short to B+ / Open circuit.

Fault symptom

CHECK ENGINE.

On-Board Diagnostics

Type of diagnosis:

- Continuous.

Enable criteria:

- Turn Ignition On.

- Battery voltage should be between 10.2-15.8 V.

- P0112 or P0113 should not be detected.

- Intake air temperature should be over -10 °C.

Fault criteria:

- Voltage on the input exceeds 4.974 V for more than 0.52s.

Dependents:

- None.

System reaction to a fault:

- The control module will continue using the coolant temperature substitute value, -20 °C on start and +60 °C when the engine is running. The following limitations apply: Pedal position sensor adjustable to max 60%

OK report:

- Voltage on the input falls below 4.974 V for more than 0.52s.

Fault handling: (See section Fault handling III, other emissions-related components and functions for more information)

- Type III.

Diagnostic help

Fault diagnosis concerns an electrical fault in connecting leads or in the sensor.

Functions in the diagnostic tool related to the fault:

- Read value: Coolant Temperature ( Coolant Temperature Sensor)

See also description of read value under "Read Values" menu for more information.

Checking the wiring

Jiggle the wiring harness at several points and in different directions to detect intermittent breaks and short circuits. Observe the multimeter, diagnostic tool or test lamp during the check.
