Torque request

Torque request

The accelerator pedal is connected to a position sensor. As the accelerator pedal is depressed (fuel request), the control module will inform ECD-U2P electronically of the requested torque.

The position sensor is used to translate the driver's request from torque to an instruction that the engine control module can understand and process.

Inside the position sensor are two potentiometers that vary the voltage to the control module inputs depending on the angle of the position sensor axle. The position sensor comprises a resistor ring with collector shoes. The collector shoes are fitted to the axle of the position sensor and move across the resistor ring in relation to the movement of the axle.

Potentiometer 1 shows 1 V for idling speed, potentiometer 2 shows 0.5 V - i.e. half as much.

Potentiometer 1 shows 4.4 V for full load, potentiometer 2 shows 2.2 V - i.e. half as much.

In case of a fault in one of the potentiometers, the CHECK ENGINE lamp will be turned on and if a fault arises in both potentiometers, the engine will also run at a fixed idling speed of 1500 rpm.
