Steering swivel member

Steering swivel member

The steering swivel member is the main component of the wheel bearing assembly and consists of a bearing housing with steering arm, mountings for the MacPherson strut, ball joint and outer track-rod end. The steering arm is curved inwards and causes the front wheels to assume slightly different angles when cornering so that the car will be easier to steer round bends.

The bearing consists of a double-row angular contact bearing that is bolted to the steering swivel member. The brake disc is fitted to the outboard side of the hub and the disc backplate is bolted to the steering swivel member.

When the steering wheel is turned the steering swivel member with wheel hub and wheel rotates about an imaginary line, the steering swivel axis, which runs through the ball bearing in the upper spring cup and the steering swivel member's ball joint.
