Brief description, SID control module.

Brief description, SID control module.

The SID control module is mounted on the back of the main instrument unit. The functions of the control module are: to convey information to the driver via the main instrument display, to control the horn, to control the instrument and display lighting and also to carry out calculations for the unit's trip computer function. The unit has its own diagnosis function and diagnostic trouble codes are set if there is a fault.

The SID control module receives information from its own sensors and switches and also from other systems. Some of the information is transmitted by the control module on the bus.

The SID control module is connected to both the 2-lead and the 1-lead I-bus. The control module functions as an information link (gateway) between the two I-busses

The SID control module has the following sensors and switches:

Ambient temperature sensor

Steering wheel controls

Coolant level sensor

Washer fluid level sensor

Filament monitor, front lights

Rheostat

Ambient temperature sensor

The temperature sensor provides information to SID regarding current ambient temperature.

Steering wheel controls

Cars without Sentronic have 9 control buttons on the steering wheel. Cars with Sentronic have 11 control buttons on the steering wheel.

The steering wheel controls are used for the following functions:

Horn

Audio system

Trip computer

Delete the message (CLR)

Shifting up and down (only cars with Sentronic)

When a button is pressed, the SID control module reads a voltage level.

Coolant level sensor

The sensor detects a low coolant level and informs the SID control module when the level is low.

Washer fluid level sensor

The sensor detects a low washer fluid level and informs the SID control module when the level is low.

Filament monitor

The filament monitor monitors the front headlamp function and informs the SID control module.

Rheostat

The SID control module uses the current rheostat setting to control the car's display lighting.

The rheostat level is sent on the bus in order to be used for control and instrument lighting adjustment.

Interior light sensor

The light sensor is built into the main instrument unit and is used to measure the light strength in the cabin. The SID control module uses the current light value together with the rheostat value to determine the intensity of the display illumination.

Cabin light level is send on the bus to be used for main instrument panel indicator lamp lighting adjustment.

The display lighting value is output to the bus to control the light intensity of the displays.

Units and languages

The SID has four different combinations for units:

litres/100km + °C (24 hour)

miles/gallon (US) + °F (12 hour)

miles/gallon (imp) + °F (12 hour)

miles/gallon (imp) + °C (12 hour)

Messages can be obtained in six different languages:

Swedish

English

German

French

Italian

Spanish

The units and language selected are output to the bus for use by other systems.

Acoustic warning

The SID unit has an integral speaker for acoustic signals for its own functions and the functions of other systems.

Trip computer

The trip computer in the SID control module is controlled with buttons situated on the left-hand side of the steering wheel.

The trip computer is available in two versions, SID 1 and SID 2 with functions as shown in the table:

Time

In the SID control module there is an internal clock with the current time, date, month and year. The current time is transmitted via the bus from the radio to the control module.

CHECK messages

All of the connected systems in the car can, via the SID control module, use the main information display to convey CHECK messages. If there is more than one message, a + is shown on the left-hand edge of the display.

Service Indicator Message

Petrol driven cars

The SID control module activates the following service message:

Time for service. Contact service.

Cars with diesel engine

The SID control module shows service messages on the main instrument display when servicing is due. Any of the following messages may be displayed:

Time for intermediate service

Time for main service

Time for intermediate and main service

Horn

The SID control module activates the horn after receiving information from the steering wheel control.

Night Panel

Night Panel function which switches off the display and parts of the instrument lighting, and dims the button lighting.

The Night Panel information is output to the bus for use by other systems.

Engine off time

The SID control module calculates the length of time the engine has been switched off. The time information is used by the external temperature function.

The time value is output to the bus to be used for the starting settings for the ACC, etc.

Parking and auxiliary heater

There are programming and timer functions incorporated in the SID control module to facilitate the control of petrol driven or electrical engine heaters.

Information display (MIU)

The information display is a part of the main instrument unit and is located in the lower section of the speedometer. The information display is used by the SID control module which via the bus informs the main instrument unit as to what is to be shown on the display.

The SID control module uses the information display for showing the following information:

- Symbols

- Trip computer information

- Odometer and trip meter

- Check messages

- Units and languages

- Parking heater ON/OFF

- Information from the ACC

Important

The Service Manual does not cover the complete operation of the SID unit. More detailed information is given in the Owner's Manual.
