Passenger airbag

Passenger airbag

A passenger airbag is available as a factory-fitted option. On certain markets, cars are equipped as standard with a passenger airbag. The airbag is mounted in the dashboard above the glove box on the passenger side and is connected to the control module as shown below and under Control module connections , Airbag LHD and Airbag RHD .

The cable carries test and detonation current from the SRS control module to the passenger airbag.

The passenger airbag, which has a volume of about 101 litres, incorporates a gas generator. The gas generator is bolted to the airbag housing, which is bolted to the dashboard. The airbag is held in place by a film with fracture lines. The dashboard has corresponding fracture lines.

3. Explosive charge, gas generator 30%

6. Gas distribution unit, filter

7. Belt

The gas generator comprises a steel housing, two electric detonators, two explosive charges with different quantities of powder for stage one and two, pressurised gas and gas distribution unit that distributes the gas.

The gas generator is detonated in two stages: a primary stage (70% pressure) and secondary stage (30% pressure). The delay between the two detonations depends on the information the control module receives from the various sensors. See the control module information for conditions.

On receiving an activation command, the control module supplies voltage to the detonators (1) which ignite the explosive charges (2 and 3). During stage 1 an explosive charge (2) is detonated, which is a charge of 28.4 g. During stage 2 a further charge (3) is detonated, which is of 4.3 g. The compressed gas expands from the heat. The gas passes through a gas distribution unit (6) before it proceeds to the airbag.
