Windscreen

To remove

1. Open the door windows so that there is no risk of the windscreen being pressed out by the overpressure that would build in the passenger compartment if one of the doors would be closed.

2. Open the front doors and remove the roof moulding.

3. Remove the side strips from the windscreen.

4. Remove the windscreen wipers; use 85 80 144 Puller, windscreen wiper arm .

5. Remove the rubber covers from the wiper stems.

6. Remove the rear bonnet seal.

7. Remove the clips holding the covering over the bulkhead partition space. Remove the covering by lifting the front edge and then pulling forward so that the clips release from the windscreen edge. Then lift rearwards and remove it.

8. Remove the A-pillar trim and ticket holder. Remove the upper clip from the trip by prising it from the outside with a screwdriver.

9. For cars with rain sensor, see points 10-12. If the car does not have a rain sensor, continue from point 13.

10. Remove the sensor cover by inserting 82 93 474 Removal tool in the bottom edge and pulling the tool upwards. Repeat on the opposite side and lift away the cover.

11. Press out the ends of the clamps from the retainers on the windscreen console. It helps if you press the sensor towards the windscreen. Bend out the clamps and remove the sensor from the console.

Note

Take care when releasing the clamps so as not to scratch the windscreen.

12. Unplug the connector from the sensor and let it hang from the headlining.

13. Remove the upper windscreen moulding.

14. When replacing glued windows, use 82 93 714 Kit, window removal tool . If the window is so damaged that the suction cups do not adhere, use 30 14 099 Handle for cutting wire and saw out the window with the help of a co-worker.

Warning

Use the protective equipment that is supplied with the windscreen removal and adhesive kit, such as the goggles and protective gloves.

15. Measure out 6.5 m cutting wire.

16. Insert the chisel through the glue joint from the inside of the windscreen in the centre of its lower edge.

17. Hook the wire ends through the eyes of the chisel and bend the ends so that they do not come out.

18. Pull the chisel back through the glue joint into the passenger compartment. Pull in the wires about 0.7 m.

Warning

Ensure that the wire is not connected to the battery terminals if the cover is removed, otherwise there is a risk of short-circuit/fire.

19. Unhook the cutting wires from the chisel. Straighten the wire ends so that they are at an obtuse angle. Put the chisel aside.

20. Place the cutting wire around the windscreen. Ensure that it lies around all corners. Pull in the wire and check that it lies between the metal and the windscreen.

21. In some cases, the glue joint may be so far down that there is no metal edge to place the cutting wire against (it then slides under the metal edge and cannot cut the glue joint). If that is the case, make four holders to keep the wire in place against the glue joint. Press the holders into the glue joint and place the wire in the holders. Then pull the wire into the car and continue as follows.

22. Fit the whimples in the corners on the inside of the windscreen.

23. Attach the wire ends in the coils of the whimples. Make sure that the wires do not cross. Use the groove in the whimple's suction cup as a pulley to get a good angle.

24. Press the plastic guard down between the cutting wire and the panel to protect the interior equipment.

25. Crank with a lock handle so that the wire cuts through the glue joint. Move the plastic guard as the wire moves. Move the whimple little by little to obtain a good angle. A transverse angle with the wire cuts best. If necessary, use the second whimple as support. If the wire seems to be coming off, wait 10-15 seconds so that the wire can work itself into the glue joint.

26. When the wire begins to cut the upper part of the windscreen, fit the protective tool with suction cups between the cutting wire and metal roof to protect the interior equipment. Move the whimple and protective tool little by little as the windscreen loosens.

27. Fit the lifting handle on the outside of the windscreen.

28. With the assistance of a co-worker, lift the windscreen away.

To fit

Important

Betaseal X 2500 cures in 1 hour at 23°C and 50% relative humidity. To avoid the glass from coming loose or its position changing during the curing time, the car must not be subjected to jolts or blows. The doors, tailgate and bonnet must not be shut. The car must not be rocked or rolled. Neither must the glass be pressed in while the adhesive is curing.

Use 32 025 039 Adhesive kit, window glass for bonding windows. To avoid confusion between the cleaner and primer, the tops of the tubes are different colours:

Betaclean 3300 (glass cleaner)

One wet and one dry cleaning cloth

Betawipe 4001 (for glass with plastic surround)

Blue cap

Betaprime 5061 (primer, glass and paintwork)

Green cap

The car should be standing with all four wheels on a level surface when the windscreen is fitted. For the best possible results, it is extremely important for all surfaces that have been cleaned or primed to be kept free from dust and dirt while work is in progress. The same goes for the adhesive when it has been applied. Therefore, once work has started it should be continued without interruption until the windscreen has been fitted and the adhesive has hardened. The adhesive begins to harden as soon as the contents of both tubes are mixed. The windscreen should therefore be fitted into place within 5 minutes of the time that application of the bead of adhesive was first begun. Note that points 7-11 must without exception be carried out in the given order to ensure satisfactory results with maximum adhesion.

1. Cut down the bead of adhesive on the window flange to a height of no more than 2 mm. Use the cutting tool from the removal kit. If the old windscreen is to be put back into place, the bead of adhesive on the windscreen should also be cut to max. 2 mm. Old, well-bonded adhesive is a good foundation for the new bead. Remove any loose adhesive from the glass and metal.

2. Remove loose particles and dirt from the metal flange with a vacuum cleaner.

3. Make good any damage to the paintwork.

Scrape off any loose flakes of paint with a knife.

Wash clean with Terosans Rengörare FL (Cleaner).

Apply primer. Use Standox 1K Füllprimer.

Apply the finish coat.

Important

The paintwork must be flawless to prevent the onset of corrosion. In addition, an imperfect paintwork repair could result in the layers of paint separating under the bead of adhesive.

4. If there is no old adhesive, or if the adhesive is not intact, primer must be applied to the surfaces with which the adhesive will be in contact. Use Betaprime 5061 (green cap) on any touched-up surfaces. Do not use body primer on old, well-cohered adhesive.

5. Fit the lifting handle on the outside of the windscreen and place the windscreen inside up on a stand to provide an appropriate work height.

6. Press on the decor strip on the upper edge of the windscreen. The decor strip must extend the same amount at each end. Avoid touching the primed surface.

7. Carefully wash the edges of the window with Betawipe 3300. Carefully wipe the edges using the wet cleaning cloth. Dry with the dry cleaning cloth provided in the adhesive kit. Avoid touching the cleaned surface.

Important

Do not allow the cleaning agent to dry naturally as it may leave traces of grease on the glass. Always dry with clean, lint-free rags and refold them frequently.

8. Apply Betaprime 5061 (green cap) to the cleaned surface. Allow the primer to dry for 10 minutes.

Note

If the windscreen is to be secured with tape after being fitted, make sure the roof has been cleaned before starting to fit the windscreen.

9. Apply the adhesive as follows:

Clip off the tip of the adhesive cartridge nozzle so as to provide a suitable shape to the bead of adhesive.

Hold the gun at right angles to the window. Start at the lower edge of the window and apply a bead of adhesive to the primed surface along the retainer strip. Make sure that there are no breaks in the adhesive bead.

Important

The adhesive starts to cure as soon as the contents of the two tubes is mixed. Fit the window glass within 5 minutes of starting to apply the bead of adhesive.

10. With the assistance of a co-worker, put the windscreen in place.

10.a. Adjust the windscreen up against the roof so that the decor strip is against the edge of the roof.

10.b. Adjust the window laterally so that it is even with the LH and RH edges.

11. Secure the windscreen with tape or straps so that it is held against the edge of the roof.

Important

There must be no strain on the windscreen.

12. Reset the glue gun.

13. Allow the adhesive to cure before continuing. Betaseal X 2500 cures in 1 hour at 23°C and 50% relative humidity.

14. Fit the lower portion of the A-pillar trim into place. Fit the upper clip with the strap down in the trim. Press the trim into all clips. Check the fit of the door weatherstrip.

15. Fit the cover over the bulkhead partition space.

16. Fit the rubber seals on the wiper spindles.

17. Fit the wiper arms and rear bonnet seal.

18. Fit the windscreen side strips.

19. Fit the roof moulding.

20. For cars with rain sensor, see points 21-24. If the car does not have a rain sensor, continue from point 25.

21. Clean the windscreen where the sensor is to be placed.

22. Plug the connector into the sensor.

23. Place the sensor in its console on the windscreen. Fit the clamps by pressing the sensor against the windscreen while fastening one corner at a time. Replace any defective clamps. See Replacing brackets .

Note

Check that the clamps sit correctly in their grooves and that the sensor has good contact with the windscreen.

24. Position the lower edge of the rain sensor cover. Press the cover home onto the windscreen console.

25. Check the windscreen washers, and the function and park position of the wipers.

Check the function of the rain sensor (if fitted).

26. Remove the tape and clean the windscreen both inside and out.
