The unit contains a mobile phone as well as a GPS receiver and is connected to the radio, microphone, control panel, GPS/mobile phone antenna as well as data link connector via the car's wiring harness. The unit is equipped with a 12-pin and a 16-pin connector as well as an antenna connection.
The main functions of the system are as follows:

•
To receive bus messages when airbags are deployed in order to automatically phone for assistance.

•
To relay telephone conversations via the system speakers.
•
To switch off other sound from the audio system when making a telephone call. This is effected by feeding a "mute" signal from the OnStar unit to the audio unit which then disconnects the normal audio inputs to the speakers and the signal to any external amplifiers.
