Fault symptoms
The engine goes down to an idling speed that is too low / stops during first cold start
Conditions
The following conditions apply for this fault symptom:
The BioPower engine is designed to run on an ethanol proportion in the fuel of a maximum of 85%. Some fuel suppliers have mistakenly delivered fuel with an ethanol proportion that is too high (90-93%). This is outside the car's specifications.
When starting for a first time at temperatures below -30 °C the engine speed can be far too low and in some cases the engine can stop. After a restart the engine will run normally again.
Diagnostic procedure
If a car equipped with a BioPower engine behaves as above, check and readapt the ethanol level in accordance with the following description.
1.
Connect Tech 2 to the car.
2.
Select "Trionic" and select "BioPower E85"
3.
Read "Adapted Ethanol Content" in %. If the ethanol level is 85% or less, carry out a forced ethanol adaptation.
Note
The highest ethanol level that can be displayed in Tech 2 is 85%. This means that even if it is e.g. 93% the value displayed will nevertheless be 85%.
4.
If the problem still remains and/or the ethanol value displayed is 85%, fill with approx. 10 litres of 95 octane petrol. This reduces the ethanol content in the fuel mixture which will be displayed in Tech 2.
5.
Repeat steps 1 - 4. The percentage ethanol content has now decreased and the car is expected to behave normally with the first start.
6.
If the fault still remains, carry out a normal fault diagnosis.
Note
Explain the behaviour of the engine to the customer/driver.
