Intermediate shaft, 4-cyl diesel

To remove


1. Raise the car.

2. Remove the right-hand front wheel.

3. Remove the lower engine cover.


4. Remove the headlamp levelling sensors (option).


5. Remove the right-hand side cover.


6. Undo the clips for the brake hose and move it aside. Undo the clips for the ABS lead.


7. Remove the outer through bolt from the suspension arm and steering swivel member. Prise out the suspension arm, lower it and fix it in position with two 83 95 238 Wedge (x5) placed between the suspension arm and anti-roll bar.

8. Tap the drive shaft off the intermediate shaft using a brass drift and small sledge hammer. Turn the wheel to the left to facilitate removing the drive shaft. Tap the driver shaft if necessary. Lower the shaft in front of the suspension arm.

Warning

Use protective goggles to protect against flying splinters of metal.


9. Remove bolts for the support bearing bracket.

Important

Place a receptacle under the gearbox in order to avoid oil spillage on the floor.




To fit


1. Fit 83 95 162 Protective collar, drive shafts into the sealing ring.

Important

Always change the shaft seal in the gearbox. Lubricate with transmission fluid, see



2. Make sure that the intermediate shaft is clean and then align the intermediate shaft in the tool.

Important

Fit the intermediate shaft in the gearbox until about 20 mm remains and extract the tool before the shaft's sealing surface reaches the shaft seal.


3. Push in the rest of the shaft.

4. Fit the bearing bracket.

Tightening torque up to M06: 47 Nm (34 lbf ft)

Tightening torque from M07: 38 Nm (28 lbf ft)

5. Tilt out the MacPherson strut and connect the drive shaft to the intermediate shaft, making sure you hear the circlip click into place. Lubricate with 90 513 210 Universal paste .


6. Remove the wedges, reposition the suspension arm and connect it to the steering swivel member. Fit and tighten the nut to the correct torque.

Tightening torque 50 Nm (37 lbf ft)

Warning

Make sure the steering link pin is visible on top of the steering swivel member before fitting the bolt.


7. Secure the brake hose to the mounting on the steering swivel member and fit the clips. Fit the ABS cable. (2 mountings)

8. Fit the side cover.


9. Fit the headlamp levelling sensors (option).


10. Fit the wheel. Refer to Wheels .

Important

The wheel must be suspended freely when tightening the wheel bolts


11. Fill the gearbox with oil to the correct level. See Topping up with transmission fluid

12. Fit the lower engine cover.


13. Lower the car to the floor.
