Basic engine

Z19DTH DOHC, 110 kW / 315 Nm

The engine is a transversely mounted, fluid-cooled, 4-cylinder in-line engine with 4 valves per cylinder and 2 overhead camshafts. The engine has direct fuel injection, which means that the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. It is also a crossflow engine, i.e. the inlet ducts are on one side of the combustion chamber and the exhaust ducts are on the other side. The total swept volume is 1910 cm3.

Cylinder block, crankshaft pistons

The cylinder block is made of special cast iron with the cylinder bores drilled directly into the block. The crankshaft is mounted on five bearings. The thrust bearing is located at the third main bearing. The pistons are made of a light metal alloy. Each piston has a cavity that constitutes the combustion chamber. The gudgeon pin floats in the piston and connecting rod. In order to reduce piston temperature, the pistons are oil cooled, with an oil jet spraying the underside of the piston crown. The oil pump is a conventional rotor pump; the oil filter is an insert filter; an oil/water heat exchanger cools the engine oil.

Cylinder head 16V DOHC (Z19DTH)

The cylinder head, which is made of aluminium, has four valves per cylinder. Two camshafts are mounted in the camshaft housing, which also houses the bearings. The bearings are of different sizes to make it possible to remove the camshaft through one end of the camshaft housing. The camshafts act on rocker arms that are equipped with roller bearings. The rocker arms are mounted on bearings at one end. A ball cup constitutes the upper part of the hydraulic valve clearance balancers and press against the valve stem at the other end of the rocker arm. The hydraulic valve clearance balancers keep the clearance between the camshaft and rocker arm/roller bearing to almost zero. They do not participate in any movement. The exhaust camshaft is driven by the crankshaft via a belt. A sprocket on the exhaust camshaft transfers power to the intake camshaft sprocket.

Four injectors and four glow plugs are mounted in the cylinder head.
