Turbo damage due to insufficient lubrication

Fault symptoms

Thick, blue smoke; engine consumes oil and has impaired performance. The turbo bearings may become worn or notched.

Conditions

In some driving conditions, the filter in the banjo screw at the turbo's oil inlet may become clogged. This prevents the oil flow for turbo bearing lubrication and could lead to severe turbo damage.

This most commonly occurs when driving long distances at high speed, but can also occur other times.

Diagnostic procedure

1. Upon turbo replacement: use a new banjo screw (part no. 931 793 03).

2. Clean the charge air cooler.

3. Change the engine oil.
