Handbrake system

When the handbrake lever is pulled up, the force is transferred via the cable equalizer (right illustration) and two cables to the actuating levers (2) on the handbrake unit located inside the rear wheel brake drums.

The actuating levers (2) press the brake shoes (1) against the brake drums so that braking is achieved.

To compensate for brake lining and brake drum wear, an adjusting unit (3) is provided which is accessible from the outside through a hole in the brake drum.

When the handbrake is applied, the handbrake lever switch closes a circuit to ground and the handbrake warning lamp in the main instrument display panel lights up. When the handbrake lever is released, the return spring acts on the actuating lever and the brake shoes return to the rest (brakes off) position.
