Measuring piston height

Measurement

Clean the sealing surface of the engine block and the measurement points of the pistons.

Fit 78 40 622 Dial indicator and a suitable probe tip from 87 91 857 Probe tips on 83 95 550 Measuring jig .

Set the dial indicator to zero on the cylinder block.

Measure the height of all pistons as follows:

Between points 1 and 2 or 3 and 4. Determine the highest point by turning the crankshaft back and forth.

Use the following table to determine the type of gasket for the cylinder head.

Piston height over cylinder block	Gasket thickness	Marking
0.020 - 0.100 mm	0.77 - 0.87 mm	no holes
0.101 - 0.200 mm	0.87 - 0.97 mm	one hole
0.201 - 0.295 mm	0.97 - 1.07 mm	two holes
