Points to bear in mind when handling the battery

Points to bear in mind when handling the battery

Avoid disconnecting the battery unnecessarily.

1. Make sure you connect the battery correctly. Connecting the wrong polarity on the battery can damage the car.

Therefore, always connect:

the plus battery cable (red) to the battery's positive terminal;

the minus battery cable (black) to the battery's negative terminal;

When connecting an external power source, e.g., another battery:

always connect positive terminal to positive terminal;

always connect negative terminal to ground.

2. Never disconnect the battery when the engine is running.

3. Do not boost-charge the battery other than in exceptional cases. One of the battery terminals must be disconnected while boost-charging.

Do not boost-charge batteries more than 2 years old.

Warning

The battery contains acid that is corrosive. If acid gets in the eyes rinse thoroughly with water for at least 10 minutes.

4. Always wear rubber gloves and goggles when there is a danger of battery acid splashing.

5. Make sure the battery always stands upright. Acid might otherwise leak out and cause injury or damage.

6. Never place tools or other objects on top of the battery.

Important points to bear in mind

Never:

disconnect the battery while the engine is running;

remove the generator while the battery is connected;

test-run the generator in the car or on a test bench without connecting the battery;

connect the battery with incorrect polarity. The car can sustain damage.

Important

When performing electric welding on the car, the battery connection to the car body and all the generator connections must be disconnected to prevent electrical components from being damaged.
