Reconfiguration, OnStar system

The OnStar control module has a 10 digit station code (STID) and an 11 digit electronic serial number (ESN). These numbers are used by the National Cellular Network and OnStar to identify the vehicle. As these numbers are connected to the car, the unit must not be replaced with a unit from another car.

When replacing the OnStar control module the system must be reconfigured. If the reconfiguration does not occur or fails then the system will not work correctly.

This system cannot be reset by depressing the "white dot button", instead this generates a diagnostic trouble code.

Procedure

1. Move the car to an open location without any adjacent high buildings in order to facilitate satellite communication. Allow the car to run for 10 minutes.

2. Connect the diagnostic tool.

3. Navigate to the diagnostic tool's menu System Information for OnStar.

4. Read out the station code (STID) and the electronic serial number (ESN) from the new unit under the menu System Information.

5. Press the OnStar Services Button to contact the OnStar Call Center. Inform the adviser that a new control module has been fitted in the car.

Ask the adviser to implement all necessary procedures, including the following:

Add new STID and ESN in order to update the customer's account.

Activate OnStar Personal Calling if the service is available for the customer.

Note

If the reconfiguration does not occur then it is possible that the preprogrammed phone number and digital home station in the OnStar control module are incorrect. It is possible to change the phone number and digital home station using Tech2.
