Brief description

Saab 9-5 is equipped with a wash/wipe system for cleaning windscreen, headlamps and rear window. The wash/wipe system for the rear window is available on 5-door cars. The headlamps are cleaned with high-pressure washers and do not have wipers.

The system functions are controlled using a lever on the right-hand side of the steering column and with the rain sensor and DICE control module, see DICE (dashboard electronics).

Wiper systems without rain sensor are controlled with a lever on the right-hand side of the steering column and with the rain sensor and DICE control module, see DICE (dashboard electronics).

The washer and wiper system comprises:

Rain sensor

The rain sensor is located inside the windscreen, in front of the rear-view mirror. The rain sensor is a control module with its own logic and is activated by moving the wiper stalk switch to automatic position. The rain sensor detects water or snow on the windscreen and activates the windscreen wipers. A light sensor measures the external light so that the rain sensor will be able to adjust its sensitivity to the surrounding light.

Windscreen wipers with rain sensor

The windscreen wiper unit is located under the cover below the windscreen and comprises a motor, arm linkage and two wiper arms with wiper blades. The function is controlled by the rain sensor using two wiper relays.

The windscreen wiper operates at two speeds (high/low) and automatic. In automatic mode, the rain sensor sensitivity can be adjusted using a control on the wiper stalk.

Windscreen wiper without rain sensor

The windscreen wiper assembly is located under the cover beneath the windscreen. It consists of a motor, an arm linkage and two wiper arms with wiper blades. The operational functions are controlled by DICE with the help of an intermittent wiper relay.

The windscreen wipers have two speeds (high/low) and one intermittent wiper position, the frequency of which can be regulated to intervals of between 2 and 15 seconds by a control on the control switch.

Rear window wiper

The rear window wiper is located on the tailgate and comprises a motor and a wiper arm with wiper blade. The washer jets are located by the wiper arm mounting on the tailgate and direct the washer fluid upwards on each side of the wiper blade.

The function is controlled by DICE. The rear window wiper has an intermittent position. The interval between wiper strokes cannot be adjusted.

High-pressure headlamp washing

A washer jet is located in front of each headlamp and is activated by pressing the windscreen washer control for longer than 0.5 seconds.

Washer assembly

The washer unit is located in the front left wing. It comprises a fluid reservoir with two or three pumps and a level switch. The washer unit also includes hoses to the jets on the bonnet, headlamp washer hoses and jets. See:

The function is controlled by DICE. If the fluid level is low, a message is sent to the bus. SID generates an audible signal and displays WASHER FLUID LEVEL LOW.
