Recommended oil grade
Recommended oil grade |
Background |
The choice of synthetic oil is based on demands for extended service life and improved fuel economy to reduce impact on the environment. Using recommended oils avoids the tendency to build up residue inside the engine, which can block the lubricating system, increase wear and damage engine components.
Engine performance
Lubrication and viscosity are of the utmost importance in obtaining the best possible performance from a Saab engine. It is therefore important that the oil recommendations are followed. Thanks to the recommended oils' beneficial flow properties at low temperatures, oil quickly reaches remote parts in the lubricating system, leading to less engine wear. Similarly, the oils' viscosity at high temperatures has been adapted to also provide the best function in extremely hot markets.Fuel economy
Fuel economy is improved by the use of oil with as low a viscosity as possible. Meanwhile, however, problems can arise with excess wear if the oil film becomes too thin due to low viscosity. Recommended oils maintain correct viscosity at different temperatures. Synthetic oil also reduces fuel consumption while the engine is warming up after starting.Durability
It is essential that oil properties are fully maintained during the period between oil changes. Certain oil additives are consumed too quickly, which results in internal residue that damages the engine and causes excessive wear. Saab and Mobil oils ensure that today's high demands on durability are met as long as the service schedule is followed.A much neglected aspect is that more frequent oil changes are needed if the car is driven for short distances and in urban stop-and-go traffic since a greater amount of fuel and condensation blends with the engine oil under such conditions.
Environmental aspect
Lower fuel consumption leads to lower emissions, especially carbon dioxide (CO2).Service and oil changes
It is vital that the oil change intervals specified in the Saab Service Programme are followed to ensure that all engine components reach their full service life and that engine performance is optimal. Both distance and time between service are essential. Servicing must be carried out when one of the criteria - service message, distance or time - is met.Recommendation
Use Saab oils based on the following tables. These oils fulfil the previously mentioned requirements.

We strongly advise against the use of additional engine oil additives.
The risks stemming from use of an oil that does not fulfil the above specifications are great. If an oil of too low a grade is used, there is risk of either wear due to poor lubrication or residue in the engine due to prematurely consumed oil that cannot keep the engine clean. This can lead to oil duct clogs and engine damage.
